What's Your Excuse

Wise words from Jen Mueller on sports and leadership

The world appears to be awash in excuses. It’s never your fault. America isn’t great because of immigrants, or feminism is causing our boys to fall behind.

The manosphere likes to blame others for all its problems. It has excuses but no solutions that don’t involve trampling others' rights. How do we combat this dangerous mindset?

Yes, it’s dangerous! We don’t want our female friends, our daughters, or our granddaughters to be treated like dirt or brutalized by men. We don’t want to lose the progress we’ve made over the years, like no-fault divorce or opening a bank account without a man’s permission.

Our best weapon is recognizing women's power and connecting with other women worldwide to use it against authoritarianism. Authoritarianism is anti-woman and steeped in patriarchy. It has arrived in the US now, with Trump and Project 2025.

But we shouldn’t play the blame game, either. We need to understand the issues the men in our lives have and work together toward a solution. How do we do that?

Defuse the #NotAllMen defensiveness. First, we need to explain again (and probably more than once) that feminism seeks equality for all genders. Explain that alpha male domination crap is a danger for them, too.

Show them the traditional forms of masculinity are not healthy. A good majority date back to the Romans, and we’re not Romans anymore. They were fantastic engineers but way down at the bottom of social equality.

Traditional masculinity means men are most likely to be victims of homicide, more likely to die by suicide, and comprise a good majority of drug and alcohol addicts. The solution is working together, all genders (yes, there are more than two) on the path to equality. It’s an uphill battle in today's world, but we’ve come too far to go back.

Rome ceased to exist over a thousand years ago. It’s time to let it go and move ahead with more equitable social structures.
