Earthworm Impersonation

The creative joys of voice acting

What does an earthworm sound like? The company who hired me told me their client wanted funny, childish voices for the video teaching kids about the earth. I came up with several voices, and they chose one.

When hired, I discovered I had booked the main speaker job, the earthworm, with a script that was over 1100 words long. It’s challenging to stay in a funny voice for 10 minutes, but it’s also satisfying when you get the job done, and they have only a couple of pickups.

Accents are particularly difficult for me, as I’m not a mimic. Character voices come easier, mainly when the voice specifics are included, like “he spoke the words in bunches” or the villain sounded like Speedy Gonzales. I watched Speedy Gonzales cartoons on YouTube to get that voice down!

Stripped Down: A Naked Memoir is an autobiography featuring some specific characters' voices. It’s good to challenge yourself and sounding like a mobster is up next as Stripped Down continues. Wish me luck!
